The Compliance Risk with RCS and iOS 18

Introduction:

Unfortunately, our investigation revealed that the strain on technical teams—which are often already overwhelmed and sometimes handling dual responsibilities alongside compliance—has become significantly greater.

  1. Not Supported by Carriers - RCS messages can not be captured by the network and due to this they can not be archived starting day one.

  2. Disabling RCS via MDM - There is currently no Mobile Device Management(MDM) solution to disable RCS on day one. While we expect Apple will eventually make this available, there is no stated timeline and historically MDM API updates come at the Worldwide Developer Conference in June for release in the following September (i.e. a year from now).

  3. Better Stock up Now - All newly purchased iPhones, even if it's not the new iPhone 16 model will come with iOS 18 preinstalled on the device as soon as it’s released. This means, if you have new employees or need to replace phones during this arbitrary 90 day window suggested by the providers, then you need to buy them all now. You might want to get a year’s supply to be safe.

  4. No iPhone 16 - You will not be able to issue any iPhone 16 to any employees due points 1 and 2 above. They will come with iOS 18 pre-installed and RCS enabled by default for most carriers.

We anticipate that these shortcomings will demand thousands of hours of manpower from companies to develop and implement a strategy addressing this small list of identified challenges. We also recognize that many more issues are likely yet to be uncovered.

We are proud to announce that we have successfully onboarded numerous firms with our reduced setup fees in anticipation of the iOS 18 release. This initiative has allowed them to eliminate their Y2Y 2.0 RCS countdown clock and fully leverage the features and benefits that iOS 18.0 offers.
